  21. DESCRIPTION
  22.     Smodem is a new generation file transfer protocol. Unlike older
  23.     protocols, like Zmodem, it has a separate low level multiplexed
  24.         transfer layer (MSLP) and a high level file transfer layer. This
  25.         new design simplifies protocol design and will give a maximum
  26.         efficiency of as high as 99,5%.
  27.  
  28.     Multiplexing has made it possible to send one or more files in one
  29.     continuous stream without any breaks between files. This will boost
  30.     multiple file transfers dramatically.

  32.     Smodem allows you to have chat during filetransfer. Chat is done
  33.     via string gadget and the whole "sentence" is sent at once. This
  34.     allows easy implementation of multinode chats during file transfers
  35.     and tranferrates don't decrease drascticly.

  37.     The protocol has a symmetrical nature. You can connect Smodem with
  38.     itself by looping transmitted characters back to the receiver.
  39.     There is no reason to limit transfers in one direction. Smodem
  40.     will transfer files in both directions at the same time without
  41.     noticeable performance loss.

  43.     SModem works also on telnet lines, if encapsulation is turned on.
